A road trip to northeastern Colorado proved to be a jump start for the Northwest College women’s soccer team, which defeated Lamar College on Friday 3-0 but lost to Northeastern Junior College Saturday 1-0.
NORTHWEST 3, LAMAR 0
Starting out the road trip on Friday, Northwest went to Lamar, Colorado, to take on a newly formed program in Lamar (1-2 overall, 0-2 Region IX).
Northwest (1-6 overall, 1-1 Region IX) started the weekend on the right foot, with Peyton Roswadovski scoring the first goal of the game in the first half.
Despite leading in the first half, Trapper coach Rob Hill felt like the team could improve in the second half.
“I thought we were not up to par in the first half,” Hill said. “We were up, but I felt like we were playing down, were not effective and did not work hard.”
Northwest played stronger in the second half, adding to the lead through an Emily Hilario goal.
The Trappers sealed the game with an Abby Allen goal that secured the Trappers their first victory of the season.
NORTHEASTERN 1, NORTHWEST 0
Following the first victory of the season on Friday, the Trappers made the trip to Northeastern to take on the Plainswomen (2-3-1 overall, 1-1 Region IX).
Northwest battled early and often with Northeastern, but was unable to find a winning effort going forward.
The two teams were scoreless for a majority of the game, before Northeastern got a late winner in the 76th minute to give the Plainswomen the victory.
Despite the loss, Hill was optimistic.
“I was more pleased with this result than the one on Friday,” Hill said. “We stepped up and were more aggressive, more intense and played with more purpose.”
BACK HOME
Northwest returns home for two more contests this Friday and Saturday.
The Trappers will match up against Trinidad State College (0-1) on Friday at noon.
Northwest will follow that up with a game against Otero Junior College (0-1) on Saturday at 1 p.m.
“If we can continue with that mentality from Saturday then we might have a chance of competing on the weekend,” Hill said.
These will be Northwest’s final home games for September, before hosting the final two home games in nearly a month on Oct. 14 and 15 to finish the regular season.
