Panther girls battle in Powell Twilight

Add several new qualifiers

The Powell Panther girls’ track team fell short in the team standings in a home dual Tuesday night against Cody, but earned a couple of new qualifying marks for the state meet next month.

One of those marks came in the triple jump, with freshman Paige Sanders leaping to a qualifying mark and a victory with a jump of 33 feet, 9 1/2 inches.

“It’s great to see how far Paige has improved since the beginning of the season in triple jump,” coach Scott Smith said.

Sanders was one of two who earned a qualifying mark in the state meet, as Kenna Jacobsen was runner up in the 1600 meters and earned a new qualification in 5:29.74.

Other victors in the Powell Twilight included Waycee Harvey, who won the 400 meters (1:00.9) and the long jump with a 17-3 3/4, Katie O’Brien in the shot put (39-3 1/2), Addy Thorington in the high jump (4-11) and Shelby Zickefoose in the 3200 meters (12:39.94).

“The great performances were really the icing on the cake,” Smith said. “A small meet like this is great for experience and conditioning.”

Smith said that the Panthers also used the 4x400 for conditioning with more than one team running in the event but the team of Audrey Johnson, Lauryn Bennett, Leah Graham and Harvey will provide another option for the Panthers at the state meet after running 4:18.82, the third 4x400 qualifying time with different athletes this season.

Powell will have several athletes competing around the state this weekend, starting with the Wyoming Track Classic in Casper on Friday.

That will pit the best of the best against each other regardless of classification, starting at 4 p.m. at Kelly Walsh High School. Athletes in events are the top nine in field events (including ties), top 12 in the 1600 and 3200 while all other running events are the top eight in the state.

According to MileSplit those entrants as of Wednesday morning are Harvey in the 400 and triple jump, Kinley Cooley in the 1600 and 3200, O’Brien in the throws, Jacobsen in the 800, Karee Cooley, Brynn Hillman and Zickefoose in the 3200, Myah Rakness in the 1600, Thorington in the high jump and Lauryn Bennett in the pole vault.

“We will be hoping to bring home some medals from the track classic on Friday, but most importantly our kids will get a chance to compete against the very best in the state, all classes,” Smith said. “It is always a really fun meet.”

Other athletes for Powell will make the trip to Cowley this weekend, taking part in the Rocky Mountain Invitational on Saturday morning.
