Thorington signs with UW volleyball

A prolific volleyball career will continue for Powell High School senior Addy Thorington after she became the newest signee for the 2024-25 edition of the University of Wyoming Cowgirl volleyball team when she signed her letter of intent on Tuesday.

Thorington has had a successful career at PHS, starting on varsity since her freshman year for the Panther volleyball team while also being named All-State in basketball last season and being part of three straight team titles in track.

“For me, it was always volleyball,” Thorington said.

In volleyball, she has been named All-State three years in a row while racking up more than 1,300 career kills.

This past season she finished with 603 kills to lead the state regardless of classification, while also adding 81 aces to lead the Panthers.

She also contributed defensively by adding 344 digs and 119 blocks which were second and third best on the team respectively.

Thorington was part of a Panther team that finished 27-8, won the 3A West Regional championship and advanced to the state championship for the first time since 2013 and were runners-up.

She has played under coach Lesli Spencer since she was around 8-years-old, saying her coach has been a massive influence in her volleyball career.

She will join a team under second year head coach Kaylee Prigge who led the Cowgirls to a 22-10 record and a berth in the “Great 8” of the National Invitational Volleyball Championship (NIVC) in her first season.

When choosing Wyoming, Thorington was swayed by the closeness of the team as well as the facilities at the school.

“I went to other colleges and I didn’t really love the facilities and the coaches weren’t as nice and exciting as the Wyoming coaches,” Thorington said. “The facilities were amazing and the girls already made me feel like I was on their team already.”

Thorington originally was not planning on attending Wyoming despite growing up in the Cowboy state; however, upon visiting the Laramie campus, her mind had leaned towards attending UW.

UW currently only has two rostered seniors, along with two fellow Wyoming players on the roster in Abi Milby from Kelly Walsh and Evelyn Udezue.

She will also join another Wyoming senior in Laramie’s Maddy Stucky, who has also signed with the Cowgirls.

“I watched Maddy play at state and I always knew of her. She was super nice and welcoming and the coaches were like ‘it’s super cool you guys can play on the Wyoming team and represent your state,’” Thorington said.

Thorington is the first Powell athlete to sign to the Division I level since Morgan Schmidt signed to cheer at the University of Wyoming in 2021.

She signed her letter of intent Tuesday alongside her long-time best friend Waycee Harvey, who will be attending Colorado Mesa University for track and field.

“I always wanted to do it together. I knew we were both going to go to college for sports,” Thorington said. “I always saw people posting and I always wanted to sign with Waycee someday.”

Since volleyball has concluded, Thorington will continue to compete at the high school level for the PHS girls’ basketball and track teams alongside Harvey, with the pair eyeing hardware to wrap up their senior seasons as Panthers.
