Seven qualify in opening weekend

Head to Riverton Saturday

Two Park County meets on Friday and Saturday opened the season for the Powell Panther boys’ swim and dive team. Powell qualified seven for state over those two days, including all three divers after strong performances over both days.

POWELL TRIANGULAR

Kicking off the season at home the Panthers welcomed in Cody and Worland in a triangular on Friday.

The lone victory for Powell in the opening meet came from Gabe Rose, who dominated the 200 IM by 10 seconds to qualify for state with a 2:18.03.

“It was a great start for his senior year,” coach Stephanie Warren said.

The Panthers also got a host of individual second place finishes, with Will Fuller placing second in the 50 free (25.07) and 100 back (1:06.08); Rose placing second in the 500 free (5:43.81); Jon Hawley second in diving with a 188.6 and Adam Williams in the 200 IM (2:28.81).

Each of those marks were state qualifying marks, while Powell also added qualifying standards from Trystan Preator in the 100 fly (1:08.65) and Taggart Shumway in diving (161.15).

Powell placed just behind Cody in the team standings with 320 points compared to 330 for the Broncs, while Worland finished with 43 points.

“They (Worland) are a growing team too,” Warren said. “It will be nice to see those kids grow together.”

TERRY BARTLETT PENTATHLON

Powell stayed local for its second meet of the season, heading to Cody to take part in the Terry Bartlett Pentathlon against Cody, Riverton and Buffalo.

While no team scores are kept for the meet, the pentathlon gives athletes the opportunity to qualify in all of the shorter events early in the season.

The athletes competed in the 100 breast, 100 fly, 50 free, 100 free and 100 back at the event for varsity, and the 50 breast, 50 fly, 50 free, 100 free and 50 back for the junior varsity.

“That’s what is cool about the pentathlon is giving those kids the opportunity to qualify in those events,” Warren said. “It takes the stress off qualifying in those events and allows them to focus on getting better.”

Williams finished on top for the Panthers, finishing seventh overall with his combined time of 4:43.05 and qualifying in four of the five events.

Rose was just behind in ninth with a 4:44.55, qualifying in all five events — adding to his first weekend total of qualifying in seven of the eight eligible events for swimming at the state meet in February.

Fuller added additional qualifying events in the 100 back (1:05.91) and the 100 fly (1:06.36).

On the diving side the Panthers got an early opportunity to perform 11 dives, with Hawley placing second (342), Shumway placing third (327.7) and freshman Garrett Lennon earning his first qualifying standard in fifth (299.7).

“Getting into it the first two weeks they picked it up really well,” Warren said. “Qualifying well over the amount he did a great job (Lennon). Their hard work has definitely paid off from the summer.”

Despite no team scores being kept Buffalo was the lead team on Saturday, earning three of the top four total times, and five of the top eight to lead the way.

“They are going to be a tough team this year,” Warren said. “They have a young, strong team. It’s great to see them right out of the gate and hopefully we will run into them more frequently.”

RIVERTON SATURDAY

Powell now heads to Fremont County for the first time, taking part in the Riverton Invitational on Saturday.

“We are getting a full third week of training in. Hopefully our two-a-days will keep getting these guys in shape,” Warren said.

That will be the final meet for the Panthers before winter break, taking a short time away from the pool before returning in January.
