Rec district looks to launch coed softball league

Powell has been without an adult softball league for the past three summers — but that could change this year. As of last week, a total of four teams had already signed up for a planned coed league.

“That’s looking kind of promising for us,” said Powell Recreation District Director Colby Stenerson.

More teams are still needed — “We feel like we need six to make it more legit,” Stenerson said — but there’s still time to register before a Monday, June 21 deadline.

Games will be held on Tuesday and Thursday evenings, with a tentative start date of Tuesday, July 6 and an end date of Thursday, July 29.

For decades, slow-pitch softball was a popular activity among Powell area adults, with a dozen women’s teams and a dozen’s men’s teams competing a couple nights a week. But interest dwindled over the past decade. The women’s league eventually folded and the men’s league followed in 2018, after only two teams signed up to play.

Four men’s teams registered this year, but that still wasn’t enough to move forward — especially since two of the squads were from out of town, Stenerson said. However, the early interest in a coed league has him encouraged.

“We’re really hoping maybe we can get that rolling — and that could spark more interest in our men’s [league], too,” Stenerson said.

Coed teams must come up with a $150 sponsor fee to play. For more information, or to sign up, visit www.powellrec.com or call or 307-754-5711.
