Harvey signs with Colorado Mesa

After a strong high school career which included three titles at Powell High School, Waycee Harvey signed her letter of intent to continue her track and field career at Colorado Mesa University, an NCAA Division II institution in Grand Junction, Colorado.

“I visited and really enjoyed it,” Harvey said. “I connected with the coaches. Compared to other places they were real and up front with me and not trying to sell it. I got a chance to look at their really cool facilities and meet my future teammates and they were super nice.”

Harvey has been a multi-sport athlete at PHS, including playing varsity volleyball and basketball while starring on the track for the Panthers.

While she competed at a high level in all three sports, Harvey said it was always track and field that she sought to do at the collegiate level after the fun of high school.

“(It was) overnight trips where the team has fun together at restaurants and hotels,” Harvey said. “Meets in general are fun to compete in and socialize in while supporting everybody.”

In her three years on the track and in the field Harvey has been a part of three straight title winning teams for the Panthers, while claiming individual titles of her own.

She won the 100 meter dash her freshman year, placed fifth in the 200 meter dash, was part of the winning 4x400 relay team and placed eighth in long jump.

In her sophomore year she placed second in the long jump, third in the 100, fourth in the 200 and was once again part of the winning 4x400 relay team.

This past season she placed fourth in the 400 meter dash, fourth in the long jump, fifth in the triple jump and seventh in the 200.

Being in different events at PHS, Harvey has had her fair share of coaches in track and field, with each of those coaches helping push her throughout high school to be better each year.

“Some of the sprinter groups haven’t always been really big so I haven’t had a lot of teammates to compete with at practice to make me better,” Harvey said. “They push me and expect things from me. That helps me know that I need to do something that they expect of me. That makes me better.”

She said that all of the coaches at the high school have been good at communicating with each other, helping her to compete in all of her events and get the best out of her in each competition.

At the collegiate level, her focus may narrow down, but Harvey and her future coaches may have her compete in several events just like high school.

“(The focus) will still mostly be sprints,” Harvey said. “The coaches and I are looking into potentially multiple events — hopefully some jumps here and there because I really enjoy those.”

She will join a relatively young Mavericks team which has only three rostered seniors this year.

Colorado Mesa is led by Brad Gamble who has been the head coach for six years.

Harvey signed on Tuesday alongside one of her longtime friends in Addy Thorington, who will also be heading south to play volleyball at the University of Wyoming.

Harvey hopes to finish her career strong at PHS, with the Panthers eyeing a fourth consecutive title next spring in Casper while also competing on the court alongside Thorington in basketball with a chance at a title.
