Powell wrestlers defeat Greybull-Riverside

The Powell wrestling team was able to get some of its younger wrestlers more experience against solid competition while securing a 51-24 win against Greybull-Riverside on Dec. 19 at home.

For the Panthers, Tyler Wenzel won by pin (54 seconds) at 126 pounds, Broc Frank fell by pin (1:48) at 132, Wyatt Heffington was pinned (3:09) at 138, Chase Visocky lost 15-4 at 144, Patrick Haney won by fall (52 seconds) at 150, Dusty Carter lost 7-6 at 190, Jacob Eaton pinned his opponent at 215 in 40 seconds and Doug Bettger held on for a 3-2 win at 285.

Coach Nick Fulton said the match of the night was Carter losing by just one to one of Greybull’s top wrestlers, Ty Streschein.

“He did a couple of things really well though,” Fulton said. “He was scoring at the end of periods, getting takedowns, even in a losing effort.”

Fulton also mentioned Bettger winning despite being light for a heavyweight, Wenzel and Eaton being aggressive in their wins, and Frank showing no fear as a freshman going under the light at a home dual.

Greybull’s varsity was open at five weights and Powell at one, but the visitors were able to put some of Powell’s younger wrestlers to the test, something Fulton was happy to see.

“We got some young kids in and kind of bumped around some weights, getting them experience and getting them in front of the home crowd,” he said. “You’re trying to develop some of those youth kids and Greybull came in and they really had some good guys.

“I thought we looked OK in areas and I was definitely happy to have a home match in front of the home crowd and use that to kick us on into Christmas break.”

The three Panther girls who wrestled struggled against solid competition, with Nalani Jordan falling by pin (1:12) at 135, Kaprina Haney falling by pin (51 seconds) at 140 and Angelina Bontadelli falling by pin (1:05) at 145.

Fulton said the three fell off a bit from their performances at Gillette, but it also showed some needed work to be done.

“Just some technique that we need to work on with them,” he said. “All three of them are looking at films and things they’re going to correct moving forward after Christmas.”

At the junior varsity boys level, David Yates won 14-6 at 132, Hayden Jensen won by pin at 144, Michael Legerski lost by pin at 150, James Emmett lost 6-0 at 190 then wrestled up to 215 where he was pinned, and Troy Cheatham was pinned at 132.

The Panthers return to action Jan. 5-6 in Bozeman, Montana.
