Impressive times in warm weather helped the Powell Panther girls’ track and field team add three new qualifiers and a host of qualifying marks at the Meetster Bunny Invitational in Cody on Monday.
The new Panther qualifiers were Addy Thorington, who won the high jump clearing 5 feet, 1 inch; Catelynn Floy, who won the triple jump (33-9); and Lauryn Bennett, who placed fourth in the pole vault (9-0).
“Addy has been fighting getting over 5 (feet) for awhile but not only did she get it done, she did it again during the jump off to win the event,” coach Scott Smith said. “I love to see kids come through when the heat is on like that.”
Powell had two athletes add to their qualifying marks from last week, with Waycee Harvey winning the 200 (27.2) and placing third in the long jump (16-4 3/4) and Anna Bartholomew taking second in the 800 (2:24.03).
“Anna’s performance was almost four seconds better than her lifetime best which is incredible for the second meet of the year,” Smith said. “Waycee getting an automatic qualifier against the wind this early is a great sign of things to come for her.”
The Panthers also added one final qualifying time for the relays, with the team of Kami Jensen, Audrey Johnson, Kenna Jacobsen and Megan Jacobsen winning the 1600 sprint medley (4:26.61) giving Powell a qualifying time in all four relays after just two meets.
The distance events helped pace the Panthers, placing three of the top four in the 800, two in the top six in the 1600 and two in the top eight in the 3200 meters.
Katie O’Brien neared the qualifying mark in the shot put (34-5 1/2) after placing seventh and Grace Coombs placed fourth in the discus (106-1) and neared the qualifying standard.
Overall Powell placed third as a team, finishing with 130.5 points behind winners Sheridan (160.5) and Cody (145) but ahead of Kelly Walsh (111) and Worland (97).
LA KOHNKE SATURDAY
The Panthers will stay in Powell this weekend to host the LA Kohnke Invitational starting at 9 a.m. Saturday.
“We are hoping to see continued improvement and get some more qualifiers this week,” Smith said.
He said there are 10 teams from around the Big Horn Basin expected to be in attendance with weather in the 50s, so he is hoping the Panthers will set plenty of personal bests in front of the home crowd.
