Pioneers B team experiences highs, lows at state

A weekend full of highs and lows brought the Powell Pioneer B team’s season to a close at the state tournament in Rock Springs — losing to Cheyenne 12-7, defeating Rock Springs 22-4 before losing a late lead to Cody in an 11-10 contest.

CHEYENNE 12, POWELL 7

Kicking off the tournament the Pioneers (19-11) took on the No. 2 team from the southeast in Cheyenne Post 6 Prep (24-27).

Cheyenne got things started immediately, getting on with a walk and a single.

Two straight errors allowed Cheyenne to score three runs, and a third error in the first capped off a tough top of the first for the Pioneers.

Powell had an answer in the bottom of the first, after Trevion Solberg was hit to lead off and Ben Ostermiller hit a ground ball that led to an error.

An error on a bunt by Kolby Gates scored Solberg and Ostermiller, and that same error allowed Gates to round all the way to third.

Powell was unable to capitalize on the runner in scoring position, but cut the lead to 3-2 heading into the second.

After a quick top half, Powell found a way to take the lead in the bottom half of the second.

Ryan Barrus and Kaiden Apodaca singled to get on and advanced on a sac bunt by Solberg.

Ostermiller hit a sac fly that allowed both runners to score and give Powell the 4-3 lead.

In the top of the third Cheyenne found a way back on top, scoring through two walks, a double, a single along with two more errors to help Cheyenne find five runs and an 8-4 lead.

“Errors are always hard to overcome, especially at state,” manager Keegan Brown said.

In the bottom of the third, Brenton Henke walked with one out and Rowan Diaz reached on a dropped third strike with two outs to give Powell hope.

A Barrus double scored both and Powell cut the lead to 8-6 after the third.

“We were hitting the ball hard and I just told the guys as long as we make plays on the field we will win this game,” Brown said.

Four singles in the top of the fourth allowed Cheyenne to put two more on the board and reestablish the four run lead.

A single, a player hit by a pitch and another single added another run for Cheyenne in the top of the fifth to make it 11-6.

Powell got one back in the bottom of the sixth, when Ostermiller hit a double, Gates hit a single and Dominik Bieber lined out, which allowed Ostermiller to tag up and score to cut the lead to 11-7.

Cheyenne got an insurance run in the top of seventh and finished with the 12-7 victory.

“Overall, we just had a few too many errors and couldn’t quite come back from it,” Brown said.

Ostermiller and Barrus each finished with two RBIs, and Bieber also had one.

POWELL 22, ROCK SPRINGS 4

After the loss on Thursday the Pioneers dropped down to the consolation bracket, matching up with the host Rock Springs Stallions (10-19).

Powell came out with a purpose early, taking a commanding lead in the first with Solberg and Ostermiller each getting a walk.

Bieber got on with a single with one out and loaded the bases.

Jordan Loera singled to score one, Barrus singled to score another.

Bieber scored on an error on a pickoff attempt at third and a single by Apodaca scored another to make it 4-0.

Barrus scored on a passed ball, and Caden Diaz and Rowan Diaz walked to load the bases.

Solberg followed with a walk of his own to score one and make it 6-0.

Ostermiller singled to score one, and a sac fly by Gates scored a pair to make it 9-0.

Solberg scored on a passed ball during Bieber’s at bat — making it 10-0 after the top half of the first.

Powell continued scoring in the second, when Apodaca reached on an error and Caden Diaz walked to put two on with one out.

Solberg singled and scored one — extending the lead to 11-0.

In the top of the third, Bieber and Loera walked to get on base, and Barrus singled to score one and make it 12-0.

Apodaca grounded into a fielder’s choice that did not result in an out, but scored Loera to make it 13-0.

Rock Springs got a run back in the third, after a hit batter reached first and an error advanced him all the way to third before a single drove in a run to make it 13-1.

An error coupled with three walks and a single in the bottom of the fourth resulted in two more runs for the Stallions and cut the lead down to 10.

Powell squashed any hopes of a comeback in the top of the fifth, continuing its scoring spree.

Loera walked to lead off, then scored on a Barrus double to make it 14-3.

Apodaca and Caden Diaz singles loaded the bases, and another single by Henke scored two runners to make it 16-3.

A sac fly by Solberg scored one, and a fly out by Ostermiller advanced Henke on a tag up but gave Powell two outs.

Gates singled to score Henke, and another single put Bieber on.

A double by Loera scored both as Powell continued to pour it on.

Barrus singled, and Apodaca walked to load the bases.

Caden Diaz hit to score one, and Powell’s final run came on a Henke single to make it 22-3.

A single, later combined with a series of throwing errors, scored a runner and gave Rock Springs one last run to make the final score 22-4.

“It was awesome to see the boys come back and play like they did day two,” Brown said. “These guys knew they were better than what they showed in the first game and wanted to show everyone else what they could do.”

Solberg, Loera, Barrus and Henke each had three RBIs, Gates and Apodaca had two each while Ostermiller and Caden Diaz each had one RBI.

Four pitchers combined to give up only five hits and one earned run in five innings.

CODY 11, POWELL 10

Heading into the next consolation round the Pioneers came up against a familiar opponent in the Cody Cubs (10-29), a team Powell had swept just a week prior.

Powell continued its momentum immediately, with Ostermiller singling and scoring on a Gates double to make it 1-0.

Bieber flew out to reach two outs for Powell, but a Loera single scored Gates — with Loera advancing to second on the throw.

Barrus hit a ball that led to an error, allowing Loera to score and Barrus to advance to second on the throw.

Cody got one back in the bottom half of the inning, when a batter was hit by a pitch, stole second and advanced on a groundout before a sac fly scored the runner to make it 3-1 after the first.

The Pioneers reestablished the three run lead in the top of the third, when Bieber doubled before a single by Loera scored him to make it 4-1.

Cody got one run in the bottom half of the inning, with a runner reaching on a single, before advancing to third on an error and eventually scoring on a fly out to make it 4-2 after three innings.

In the top of the fifth Powell got its offense going again, as Solberg led off with a double and Ostermiller tripled to score him.

Gates hit a sac fly to score Ostermiller and extend the lead to 6-2.

Bieber reached on an error and Loera followed with a single.

Apodaca hit and reached after an error that saw Bieber score, before Caden Diaz brought another in on a single and Powell claimed an 8-2 lead.

That lead held until Cody led a furious rally in the bottom of the sixth.

“The game started out great against Cody,” Brown said. “I think we got a little too comfortable and thought they were going to fold.”

Cody loaded the bases with two singles and a walk with no outs, before a pair of singles brought in three runs.

A walk reloaded the bases, before a ground out allowed a runner to score and an error allowed for two to score and tie the contest 8-8 heading into the final inning.

Powell had an answer for the Cubs in the top half of the seventh.

A dropped third strike allowed Loera to reach base. He then stole second and scored on a single by Barrus to make it 9-8.

Barrus was later out on a fielder’s choice on Caden Diaz’s hit, before Henke walked to put two on with two outs.

Solberg hit into an error and a second runner scored to make it 10-8 heading into the bottom of the seventh.

Two singles led off for Cody in the bottom of the seventh, and a walk after a strikeout loaded the bases.

An error allowed two runners to score, but a groundout gave Powell hope with two outs and two on.

A walk loaded the bases, and another walk brought in the winning run as Cody came back for the 11-10 victory.

“That Cody team has a ton of fight in them,” Brown said. “Hopefully we learned that the game is never over until the last out is made. It was nice to see us still battle even though we let them tie it late in the game. A few mental errors down the stretch were just too much again for us.”

Gates and Loera each had two RBIs, while Ostermiller, Barrus and Caden Diaz each had one.

SEASON WRAP UP

Powell now heads into another offseason, after a year in which the Pioneers won the conference crown and finished with a winning record.

“It’s always nice to have a winning record,” Brown said. “I saw a ton of growth as young baseball players as well as young men off the field.”

Gates led the team with 25 RBIs for the year, with Solberg and Ostermiller each finishing with 20. The B team finished with nine different athletes hitting double digit RBIs.

Solberg led the team with 32 hits, followed closely by Gates and Ostermiller with 29 apiece.

Caden Diaz led the team with 57 strikeouts alongside a 1.598 ERA in seven starts which was tied for the team lead.

Gates finished with the most wins on the mound at five, followed by Caden Diaz and Loera with four wins each.

“It was a great season overall,” Brown said. “I had a blast coaching with Cory Nuss and seeing these boys work their butts off everyday. It takes a lot of work for those boys to come out all summer five days a week. I’m proud of all of them and hope they all come back next year.”
