Pioneers B set to host state tourney starting Thursday

A rare opportunity will present itself this week as the Powell Pioneers B team is set to host the Wyoming American Legion Baseball Class B State Tournament starting Thursday.

The Pioneers had a slow start to the beginning of the season, but have shown continued growth and now hold a record of 17-20 heading into the tournament.

“The team has steadily grown this year, especially in their understanding of what to do in different situations,” Pioneers B Manager Tyler England said.

Throughout the season the Pioneers have seen mixed results but have had strong games against Wyoming competition, including four wins over Cody.

Heading to the state tournament, the Pioneers will match up against seven other teams from around the state in a double-elimination tournament.

This state tournament will not be a modified double elimination tournament like the A and AA state tournaments.

Welcoming these seven teams, England is hopeful that his team can put together the best baseball of the season heading into the final weekend of the year.

“With state you just hope you will play your best baseball at the right time of the year,” England said. “This will be a cool opportunity for these kids to see where they stack up against the rest of the state.”

Games kick off Thursday at 10 a.m. and continue at 1 p.m., 4 p.m. and 7 p.m. each day through Saturday. Games will be played at 10 a.m. and 1 p.m. Sunday and there will be a game on Monday at 11 a.m. if there is a need for a third game.

Opening ceremonies will be held Thursday at 6:30 p.m. where all of the teams will be in attendance.

England is glad the state tournament will be played in Powell, and is hopeful the kids will have a familiar routine heading into their games.

“Hosting state will be great,” England said. “Everything will be normal for the kids with no out-of-town travel things to worry about and you should be able to get their very best out of them.”

There will be a $5 daily admission, any kids under 12 get in for free.

As of press time an official bracket had not yet been released.
