The Powell Panther girls’ swim and dive team continued its strong early season performances this past weekend — adding another state qualifier and winning the home Gene Dozah Invitational on Saturday after winning the Worland Quint on Friday.

GENE DOZAH INVITATIONAL

The 14th state qualifier for the Panthers secured her place in front of the home crowd for the first time this season, adding the final diver on the team to the state qualifying squad after Emma Brence placed eighth with a 152.6.

Powell divers performed strong, placing three of the top eight with each diver earning personal best scores by more than 10 points on their best six dive performances.

The lone individual victory on the day came from Charlee Brence in the 100 fly, finishing in 1:08.77 to win by 1/10th of a second.

“In an exciting race, Charlee was in fourth place at the 50, including two Cody athletes, but she had the fastest second half of any of the contestants,” coach Bob Smartt said.

Powell had a host of second place finishes, including Kaitlin Diver in the 200 free (2:13.58) and 500 free (5:52.8); Kik Hayano in the 200 IM (2:13.58) and 100 free (58.92) and Patricia Christensen in the 100 back (1:07.45).

The Panthers earned the team victory with a narrow edge over Green River 286-274, but Smartt noted that the Wolves were missing a pair of top two finishers in their respective events at state last year.

He was excited by the results however, as all seven of the 3A North opponents were in attendance at the meet in addition to Green River and Sublette County.

WORLAND QUINT

The day before on Friday the Panthers made the trip to Worland to take part in a quint between five of the teams in attendance at the Gene Dozah Invite.

Powell ran away with the team score over Worland 365-280 as the Panthers were powered by first place finishes throughout.

Seven first place finishes helped pace Powell, beginning with Hayano, who was a double winner in the 200 free (2:11) and the 100 breast (1:20.4); Addy Powell won the 50 free (28.52; Diver won the 100 fly (1:09.4); Charlee Brence won the 500 free (6:17); the 200 free relay of Hayano, Baylee Brence, Diver and Christensen won (1:53.2) and the 400 free relay of Christensen, Diver, Paige Thomas and Hayano won (4:10.53).

“Most Panthers were swimming off events to save their primary events for the next day at the Gene Dozah meet,” Smartt said. “Also, divers performed some of their more unusual dives to save their best six-dive list for the Gene Dozah meet.”

ONE MEET WEEKEND

Powell heads on the road once again this weekend, making the trip to Fremont County to take part in an invitational in Riverton on Friday.

“This will be an excellent training week,” Smartt said.

That will be the only meet of the weekend, before Powell returns home next Tuesday to take on Cody in a dual at the Powell Aquatic Center at 5 p.m. as part of Homecoming Week.
