PHS swimming faces tough competition in Worland

Add additional state qualifier

A wide variety of competition descended on Worland this past weekend, as the Powell High School swim and dive team tried to make its mark — finishing sixth in a tight team competition.

Competition at the meet included one of the top teams in 3A in Buffalo who finished in first with 386 points, ahead of 4A Sheridan in second place while Powell remained in a battle and finished close behind Cody, Riverton and Worland while staying ahead of Rawlins and Jackson.

“Jackson only has 10 kids but Jim Jenkins is a very good coach, he coached the girls’ team for many years,” coach Stephanie Warren said. “I expect them to be a very good team as they build.”

The highest finish on the day for Powell in swimming came from Rui Parker, who placed third in the 200 IM (2:10.48). Parker has now qualified in six state meet events. He will need to qualify for the 500 and 200 free races to complete his qualification in every event this season.

On the diving side Jon Hawley once again led the way, finishing in third (191.65) just .65 ahead of Bryson Laing from Cody and three points behind second-place Talon Prestwich from Riverton.

The Panthers were without one of their best divers in Ashtin Prentiss who was unable to attend due to illness.

Powell picked up its 11th qualifier of the year, adding David Polson to the growing list of state qualifiers — finishing fourth in the 500 free (6:01.80).

“It was great for him to qualify,” Warren said. “He had not been feeling well. We were anticipating him qualifying earlier but then he got sick, so it was good for him to qualify and give us more depth. I think it eases up on him a little bit.”

Other top five finishes included Gabe Rose in the 100 fly (1:01.50) and Parker in the 100 breast (1:07.30).

“Overall we had some really good swims,” Warren said. “Everyone is taking a little time off, some are adding here and there but that’s normal. We are pleased to see their hard work is paying off.”

BUSY STRETCH

Powell now heads into its busiest stretch of the season, competing in four meets over nine days all across the state.

That stretch kicks off Thursday in Cody, squaring off in a triangular with Worland and Cody at 5 p.m.

“We gotta train them hard but also keep them healthy too. That is going to be our focus,” Warren said.

Powell then heads on the road Saturday, making the trip to Lander to face top competition at an invitational set to begin at 8 a.m.

The Panthers return home on Tuesday for their last home meet of the season, kicking off senior night with a triangular with Cody and Worland at 5 p.m.
