PHS swim and dive keeps rolling to 6-0

Pair of meets this week in Worland, Douglas

Homecoming activities did not slow down the Powell Panther girls’ swim and dive team, which headed down to Worland on Saturday and won an invitational that consisted of six of the seven 3A North Conference teams.

Powell was led by a quartet of first place finishes on the day, highlighted by Kaitlin Diver who moved onto the PHS girls’ Wall of Fame after winning the 500 free with a 5:44.88.

“Kaitlin was challenged in the race by Kendall Enkelker of Douglas for the first 200 yards, then Kaitlin gradually pulled away to ultimately win the race by almost 20 seconds,” coach Bob Smartt said.

She took over the fifth place time on the wall from Anna Fuller by 5/100 of a second — Fuller joined the wall in 2019.

Other event winners on the day included Kik Hayano in the 200 IM (2:30.54), Patricia Christensen in the 100 back (1:06.95) and Kathryn Brence in the 100 breast (1:16.88).

“Patricia was in third place behind Shae Whitlock of Worland and Summer LaVigne of Cody at the 50, but she turned on the jets to win,” Smartt said.

Powell also got a set of top three finishes from Hayano who placed second in the 100 free (58.82); Charlee Brence who took second in the 100 fly (1:09.62) and Diver who placed third in the 200 free (2:12.46).

Overall the Panthers finished with 417.5 points, defeating Cody by 44 points. The Fillies took second by 67.5 points over third placed Douglas.

“The meet was scored to 16 places in individual events which favors our team depth. Every point counts,” Smartt said.

The 100 back was the strongest event of the day for the Panthers, placing four of the top six along with five of the top 14, while Powell finished with nine personal best swims as a team in Worland.

The Panthers placed top three in all three relays — earning a second place finish in both the 200 free and 400 free relays.

Powell heads back out on the road once again this week, taking part in a pair of meets on Thursday and Saturday.

The first will be a triangular in Worland on Thursday between the Panthers, Warriors and Fillies.

Powell then continues the road trip on Saturday, this time making the trip to Douglas to take part in an invitational.

Douglas has a meter pool which will require the Panthers to race longer distances in each event except the 500 free which will be replaced by the 400 free.

After the Douglas invitational the Panthers will have a week of training before a singular meet next week in Buffalo on Oct. 7.
