After a difficult loss on Tuesday last week, the Powell Panther girls’ soccer team bounced back on a long road trip southwest, defeating Mountain View 4-0 on Friday and Lyman 7-2 on Saturday.

Looking to get back on track Friday, the Panthers (5-3 overall, 3-1 3A West) were looking for another conference victory against the Buffalos (1-4 overall, 1-4 3A West).

Powell scored early, when a cross from Ava Gilliatt landed at the feet of Ivy Agee who fired it into the back of the net just five minutes into the game.

Blustery conditions affected both teams throughout the match, with the Panthers finding ways to get the ball in the net.

“The weather was less than ideal and Friday was downright miserable,” coach Danny Agee said. “The ladies thankfully kept a positive attitude and got the job done. The thing to remember is that the weather is the same for both teams but only one team can come out on top.”

The lead doubled after Agee fired in a cross that was helped along by Patricia Christensen, and eventually finished at the back post by Saige Kidd to make it 2-0 just under 24 minutes into the game.

Mountain View had its chances to cut into the lead but the Panther defense stood tall, keeping the Buffalos out of the net before once again adding to the lead.

Emery Hernandez found space from around 30 yards out, firing a shot that went between the Mountain View keeper’s legs and into the back of the net to make it 3-0 late in the first half.

Both teams had chances in the second half, but it was Powell that once again found the scoring touch to finish the victory.

Agee got her second of the game with just over 23 minutes left, helping the Panthers rebound and earn a 4-0 victory with a shutout.

“It didn’t happen right away against Mountain View, but as we went through the game we began to settle in and play the way we had been a couple weeks ago,” coach Agee said. “It was great to see, and winning with a shutout was just a bonus.”

POWELL 7, LYMAN 2

Hoping to round out the weekend with another victory, the Panthers made the short trip to Lyman to take on the Eagles (2-5 overall, 1-3 3A West).

Chances came early and often for the Panthers.

Aubree Fisher got the first goal for the visitors, as her long range effort snuck just inside the far post and gave Powell a 1-0 lead just over seven minutes into the game.

Agee got her first of the game two minutes later, blasting a left-footed shot past the keeper to make it 2-0.

Lyman got a goal of its own seven minutes later, scoring on a putback just in front of the net after Josie Hallock made the initial save for the Panthers.

A long shot by Coy Erickson helped restore the two goal lead with 17 minutes left in the half, sneaking past the keeper to make it 3-1.

Scoring in the first half was not over, with Ava Gilliatt putting home a rebound to make it 4-1 with 10 minutes left.

Agee got her second goal of the game just before the break, weaving her way through the Eagle defense and firing one into the net to make it 5-1.

Lyman got a long shot of its own early in the second half, with the shot just sneaking into the back of the net early in the half.

Agee responded, completing her hat trick nine minutes into the frame and helping Powell pull away up 6-2.

Hernandez capped off the scoring, launching in another long range effort to make it 7-2 with 11:30 left.

“We were moving the ball again and finding space which we had not done against Cody,” coach Agee said. “We were able to continue this into the Lyman game and had some great combinations with different players getting into the attack.”

BACK ON THE ROAD

Powell heads back out on the road for its second long road trip of the year, heading to Green River at 3 p.m. on Friday.

The Panthers lost to the Wolves (3-1 overall, 1-0 3A West) in the Pinnacle Cup last month, but the Panthers are hoping to return the favor in conference play with the team back to near full strength after the previous matchup.

Powell then hops over to Lander, taking on the Tigers (2-1 overall, 2-0 3A West), with both contests being key matchups as the Panthers near the midway point of their conference season.

“I hope that we simply continue to focus on what has helped us be successful and continue to build on it,” coach Agee said. “Hopefully we can stay active in the midfield and press up as a complete unit, then we should be able to find opportunities to get to goal.”
