Panthers battle elements in Cody

An up and down day of weather in Cody led to an up and down scorecard for the Powell Panther spring golf team, with the Panthers battling all the elements at the Olive Glenn Golf Club on Friday.

The morning started out nice, allowing Powell to enjoy a strong start. After seven holes the wind picked up, and was soon followed by a 45-minute lightning delay that led to rain on and off for the rest of the competition.

“This is kind of the story with spring golf as we deal with the ups and downs with the weather as well as our early game in the year,” coach Troy Hildebrand said. “All of these events are just a warm-up session for a strong summer of playing that will help lead us to more success in the fall season.”

Leading the way for Powell was Jackson Hill, who finished with an 80 to take second overall — one stroke behind winner Brandon Burns of Lovell.

“Jackson played the best round of his career in very challenging conditions,” Hildebrand said. “He actually lipped out a putt on his final hole for his first ever round in the 70’s and a tie for first on the boys’ side. He has been very consistent this spring and he just seems to be improving in all areas of his game.”

After Hill, the Panthers struggled to find consistent play on the day, with the second-highest-scoring Panther being Andrew Jones who took 19th with a 97. Hildebrand said Jones had some good stretches but ran into trouble when the bad weather hit.

Trey Scott was the third Panther and he finished with a 99 in 21st.

“Trey had played extremely well in the first three tournaments but Cody just wasn’t his day,” Hildebrand said. “He has been playing a ton of golf this spring and Friday just seemed like one of those days where he couldn’t get a lot of positive things going.”

Fourth for Powell was Seth Siebert, who finished in 31st with a round of 112.

Hildebrand said that Siebert had a tough day but kept a great attitude — doing a great job helping the younger players in the program this spring.

Trey Peterson rounded out Powell’s top five, finishing with a score of 114 to take 32nd.

“This was his first ever round in Cody and considering his experience and the conditions I thought he did an excellent job,” Hildebrand said. “He isn’t able to play a lot of golf outside of our seasons but he has made great strides in his three years.”

Finishing out the team for the Panthers was Julian Frost with a 121 to take 35th; Cole Young finished in 37th with a 134 and Jace Harris placed 38th with a 136.

Lovell finished as team champion for both the boys and girls, as Erica Cook won for the girls with a 77.

The spring season wraps up this Friday in Lander, before the Panthers head off to practice over the summer in preparation for the fall season.
