Panthers air out Bearcats

Stenerson, Schwahn connect for six in ranked victory

Posted

An all out air raid from the No. 3-ranked Powell Panthers on Friday night helped the hosts jump out to an early lead against the No. 4-ranked Douglas Bearcats in a ranked matchup at Panther Stadium — taking the first play from scrimmage to the end zone en route to a decisive 47-7 victory over the visitors.

Powell was led by the duo of quarterback Jhett Schwahn and receiver Trey Stenerson, who connected for six touchdowns. Schwahn finished 12-17 for 327 yards in addition to his seven touchdown passes and one interception.

Stenerson finished with six catches, 249 yards and six touchdowns — setting a new school record for receiving yards in the contest.

That passed the previous record of 243 set by Matt Hartford in 2000, and moved Stenerson into the fourth most yards in a single game in Wyoming history for 11-man football.

Wrapping up non-conference action at home the Panthers (4-0) looked to jump out early against the visiting Bearcats (2-1) and set the tone in front of a strong crowd.

That came on the first play from scrimmage, when Schwahn found a streaking Stenerson up the middle of the field — placing it just over the defensive back’s hands and allowing Stenerson to race down the field for an opening 89-yard touchdown.

“Offensively for us it was just kind of like we are back in business the past couple of weeks with big, explosive plays,” coach Chase Kistler said. “I think it hurt them (Douglas) and made them question whether they can stay with our receivers one on one.”

That was just the beginning for the senior duo.

The Bearcats first drive was halted around midfield when Evan Whitlock intercepted a pass and gave Powell the ball back.

A quick drive had the Panthers in the red zone, attempting to finish the drive inside the 5.

A holding call moved the ball back, and an incomplete pass resulted in a third and goal from the 12.

Schwahn rolled out to his left, and fired another pass that found Stenerson for another touchdown with 4:28 on the board in the first quarter.

A fumbled exchange by the Bearcats on the next drive allowed Keona Wisniewski to recover the ball near midfield, and give the Panthers another opportunity to extend the lead.

On a second and 5, Stenerson found a soft spot in the zone, caught the ball and avoided a tackle  — then raced up the sideline alongside a key block from Whitlock to score his third touchdown.

After a missed PAT the score stood at 20-0 with two minutes left in the first.

In the second, Powell fumbled on the first play from scrimmage and gave Douglas the ball near midfield.

Douglas appeared to stall out on a 3rd and 22, before a pass interference call gave the Bearcats life and the visitors continued to move the ball.

The drive continued and was capped off by a short rushing touchdown with 6:19 left in the quarter to make it 20-7.

Powell had an answer.

Another vertical route up the sideline found Stenerson, who hauled it in and raced 70 yards for his fourth touchdown of the day to make it 27-7.

A quick three-and-out gave Powell the ball back, and appeared to add another touchdown before the break.

A pass found Trevon Abraham on fourth down and he raced into the end zone, but a holding call on the play brought the score back.

Powell was unable to find the conversion and gave Douglas the ball back with two minutes left on the clock.

The Bearcats took advantage of the field position and started putting together a drive.

That drive led deep into Powell territory, and set up a final play before the half.

The Bearcat QB kept it rolling to his left, and raced towards the corner.

Zane Graft, alongside Abraham and Schwahn, combined for a tackle at the goal line — holding Douglas out of the end zone as time expired to hold a 27-7 lead at the break.

“You don’t want to give up momentum going into the locker room at halftime. It could be a whole different game if they score,” Kistler said.

After forcing a three-and-out, Powell got the ball and began driving to start the second half.

This time Abraham got his touchdown, taking a pass 38 yards into the end zone to make it 33-7 after a second missed extra point.

Desperate for a spark, Douglas went for it in their own territory on the next drive, but a stop by Jordan Loera turned the ball over on downs and gave Powell the ball with a chance to expand the lead once again.

A two minute drive ended up in the end zone, with Schwahn once again finding Stenerson to make it 40-7.

It wasn’t a perfect night for Schwahn however, as the next drive for the Panthers resulted in an interception just before the end of the third.

Powell stopped a scoring threat from the Bearcats via an Alex Jordan interception in the corner of the end zone early in the fourth quarter.

The Panthers chewed the clock through runs, before Stenerson found himself with another touchdown reception, his sixth of the night and Schwahn’s seventh passing, with 4:50 left to cap off the scoring against the Bearcats.

“They (Jhett and Trey) have always had a connection. They grew up playing peewee football all through school,” Kistler said. “There is that connection from all the years they have played together.”

A late 47-yard field goal attempt by Schwahn hit the crossbar and kept the scoreline as it was.

While the air show dominated for Powell, on the ground, Cody Seifert finished with 99 yards on 11 carries and Case Bradish finished with 10 for 82 yards.

Wisniewski led with eight tackles, seven of them solo.

The victory snapped a three-game losing streak for the Panthers against the Bearcats, and was the second largest margin of victory for Powell behind a 42-0 shutout in 1984.

“What I love is that we had the best week of practice and it carried over into the game,” Kistler said. “I hope the lesson this week is that we can do that every week and keep getting better but we’ve got to have the practices.”

HOMECOMING CONFERENCE OPENER

After the victory on Friday the Panthers will stay at home for a second consecutive week, welcoming the Green River Wolves (1-3) to town at 6 p.m. for homecoming.

Powell will hope to keep things rolling this week after outscoring the last three opponents 148-7 after giving up 24 points in week zero to Riverton.

Green River will look to play spoiler after losing at home to Worland 10-7 this past Friday, as the Panthers will attempt to keep focus this week before heading to Star Valley for a matchup on the road against the No. 2-ranked Braves next Friday.

“If football is the main priority then they won’t have a problem focusing,” Kistler said. “They know what to expect. It’s on them for how they take care of themselves.”
