Panther tennis drops final matches to Cody

Weather delays last week had the Panther tennis teams facing off against Cody on Monday, playing one final set of matches before the regional tournament this weekend — where the girls lost a tight matchup 3-2, and the boys were swept in Cody 5-0.

The match of the day belonged to the girls No. 1 singles, where a nearly four hour match included a strong comeback from Powell’s Chase Anderson.

Anderson started out the match by losing the first set 4-6, but battled back and won 7-6 in the second set.

She was able to outlast Hudson Selk in the third set to win 6-2.

“It was fun to see her compete really well against what Selk was throwing at her,” Panther tennis coach Joe Asay said. “She had an opportunity to step in and hit some nice shots, not all were winners but some were good enough to put her opponent in a difficult position.”

In No. 2 singles, Lachelle Lee lost her matchup to Karina Schoessler in two sets 0-6, 2-6.

The other victory on the day for the Panthers came in No. 1 doubles, where Alli Harp and Sydney Hull defeated Noelle Graham and Madison Christler 7-5, 6-4.

“The No. 1 doubles girls are really starting to click,” Asay said. “Their shotmaking is so different and they have been doing a good job of making that adjustment.”

Hannah Hincks and Alexis Terry lost their matchup in No. 2 doubles 1-6, 4-6.

In No. 3 doubles, Lucy Whipple and Maya Landwehr lost 3-6, 3-6 to Hailey Dansie and Brenna Foote.

For the boys, Cade Queen lost his matchup in No. 1 singles to Tade Geving in straight sets 3-6, 6-7 (5-7).

Nathan Preator battled in No. 2 singles after losing the first set to Nick Stewart 1-6.

Preator won the second set 6-4, but lost the decisive set 1-6.

Keegan and Kalin Hicswa started strong in their match at No. 1 doubles, winning the first set against Micah Idema and William Law 6-1.

The pair lost set two 1-6, before losing a close third set 4-6.

No. 2 doubles faced a difficult task, as Seeger Wormald and Isaac Stensing lost in straight sets 0-6, 0-6 to Stewart Aguilar and Christian Dudrick.

No. 3 doubles also struggled, as Ryan Barrus and Taeson Schultz lost to Joseph Killpack and Caleb Wallace 0-6, 1-6.

“Taeson and Ryan are some athletic freshmen that had to come up against some senior boys from Cody,” Asay said. “As much as we do not want to come away with losses, sometimes we know in those losses there are some things that are too difficult to overcome.”

The regular season has now wrapped for the Panthers, but they will not have to head far to start the postseason.

Powell hosts the regional tournament alongside Cody starting Friday at 8 a.m.

Boys and girls singles for both No. 1 and No. 2, and No. 1 boys doubles, will play at Powell High School on Friday, while No. 1 girls doubles and all No. 2 and No. 3 doubles will be at Cody Middle School.

Matchups for the regional tournament were not finalized as of press time. All matches on Saturday will be at PHS.
