Two home meets kicked off 2024 for the Powell Panther swim team, winning a triangular against Newcastle and Worland on Friday where the Panthers won every event, before finishing fourth in the Gene Dozah Invitational on Saturday.

HOME TRIANGULAR

The first action of the new year came on Friday against Newcastle and Worland, with the Panthers finishing with 365 points, well ahead of Newcastle with 187 and Worland with 170.

Powell was dominant, winning each event.

The 200 medley relay team of Adam Williams, Conner Mayes, Trystan Preator and Will Fuller won with a 158.2.

Hugh Carpenter followed with a win in the 200 free (2:02.2), part of two individual wins.

Mayes then won the 200 IM (2:30.91) for his first qualifying mark of the season.

“This is the earliest he has qualified,” coach Stephanie Warren said. “It’s nice to have him qualified earlier this season.”

Williams then won the 50 free (24.68) before Jon Hawley won diving (201.05) while breaking 200 for the first time this season. Garrett Lennon also secured his state qualifying standard for six dives to add to his 11-dive standard achieved earlier.

“All three of them (Hawley, Lennon and Taggart Shumway) have a really developed dive list,” Warren said. “They just need to work on that for conference and state.”

Preator won the 100 fly (1:08.14), Carpenter won the 100 free (54.6) and Gabe Buchholtz won the 500 free (7:01.2).

The quartet of Will Fuller, Williams, Carpenter and Gabe Rose won the 200 free with a 1:41.02.

Williams then won the 100 back (1:04.06) and Rose won the 100 breast (1:17.18).

The 400 free relay team of Rose, Mayes, Garrett Lennon and Carpenter won (4:06.41) to cap off the unbeaten night.

GENE DOZAH

After the victory on Friday night the Panthers welcomed additional teams in Cody, Riverton and Buffalo to Powell on Saturday for the Gene Dozah Invitational.

Buffalo ran away with the team score, finishing with 337 points, 45 ahead of second placed Riverton.

“They (Buffalo) bring some great competition,” Warren said. “They have a great team this year. We look forward to seeing them when we can.”

Behind Riverton was Cody with 248 points and Powell with 207. Newcastle was fifth with 85 and Worland was sixth with 76.

The highest placement for the Panthers came from Rose, who finished second in the 200 IM (2:17.25).

Rose also earned a third place finish in the 100 fly (59.6) and Hawley finished third in diving (190.9) as the other highest placer.

Powell continued to earn more qualifying marks for various athletes, with Warren hoping the newer swimmers are improving.

“We just have to see if we can pick up a few of the newer athletes and get them closer to qualifying times,” Warren said.

WORLAND WEEKEND

The weather will cool off significantly this weekend but things are just starting to heat up in the pool, with the Panthers heading down to Worland for meets on Friday and Saturday.

Warren believes Friday will be a quad between Riverton, Cody, Powell and Worland with the potential of Newcastle joining.

She said the Worland Invitational will be those teams and will hopefully add new teams they haven’t seen such as Douglas and Rawlins to the mix on Saturday.

“We are working on getting everybody back into shape again,” Warren said. “Hopefully we can get them back into shape here pretty quickly and swimming their personal best times.”
