Panther swim stays home due to closed roads

Conference Friday, Saturday in Worland

The Powell High School swim and dive team had to stay at home after inclement weather left roads closed around the state on Friday and Saturday.

Powell was scheduled to attend the Gillette Invite on Friday and Saturday which serves as a state preview, but road closures did not allow the Panthers to make their way to Gillette.

Ten teams made it through the snow to the competition, with Lander running away with the team title by nearly 200 points.

“It was a bummer for some of the kids but they will be OK,” coach Stephanie Warren said. “We will hopefully consider it an early taper.”

After learning that it could not make it to Gillette, Worland opted to host a last minute meet early Saturday that the Panthers hoped to attend.

A decision was made early Saturday morning that the road conditions were too poor to travel on, keeping the Panthers at home for the entire weekend.

Powell now heads on the road this weekend to compete in the 3A North Conference meet on Friday and Saturday in Worland.

“The good news is they have swam in that pool a lot,” Warren said. “Hopefully some of our non-qualifiers as they taper this week will have their best times. That is the ultimate goal, whether they qualify or not we don’t know but we want to see them have their best times.”

The Panthers have 15 athletes qualified for the state meet currently, and are hoping to add more at the conference meet and at the last chance meet in Cody next Tuesday.
