Two dominant performances by the Powell Panther junior varsity girls’ basketball team helped push the team’s early season record to 6-1, defeating Wind River 65-11 and Thermopolis 62-24 at the Big Horn Basin Classic.

A dominant start against Wind River had the Panthers up 25-2 early in the contest, allowing significant minutes for all 10 suited players.

“Each game this group has done an excellent job of coming out and setting the tone with aggressive full-court defense and has really been able to create a lot of easy baskets,” coach Troy Hildebrand said.

Powell was able to cruise, earning a 65-11 win.

Emery Hernandez led with 12, Neveah Garcia had 11, Ivy Agee had 10, Kaedenze Carter had eight, Leah Graham had six, Melanie Garcia and Shelby Zickefoose had five each, Hali Hancock had four while Kate Mainwaring and Maddie Valdez each had two in their first JV experience.

Early in the second contest Thermopolis was strong against the Panther press, but Powell built a 16-10 lead after the first quarter.

A Thermopolis 3-pointer started the second, before a 17-0 Panther run the rest of the quarter put the score out of reach.

“This was one of our best perimeter shooting games of the season as we hit three 3-pointers and a number of 15-foot jumpers as a team,” Hildebrand said.

A 16-5 third quarter helped set up a comfortable victory at 62-24 for the Panthers.

Carter had a career best 18 points, Agee had 17, Hernandez had 10, Neveah Garcia had nine, Zickefoose had four while Graham and Hancock had two each.

Powell will remain at home, taking on Thermopolis at 3:30 p.m. on Friday and Worland at noon on Saturday. The Panther JV boys’ team will be playing at the same time for both contests.
