Panther girls run away with Lovell Invite win

Cooley breaks 3200 record

Posted

Another strong Saturday on the track saw the Powell Panther girls’ track team run away with another victory, as the Panthers finished 51 points ahead of second place Worland — racking up 198 points at the Lovell Invitational.

The distance team led the way for the Panthers, as Anna Bartholomew won the 800 (2:21.8), Kenna Jacobsen won the 1600 (5:32.4) with a qualifying time, and Kinley Cooley placed third in the 3200 (12:04.12) but broke the school record in the process.

“It was perfect for the distance kids, nice and cool with little to no wind and they really took advantage of it,” coach Scott Smith said. “Kinley breaking the school record, Kenna and Megan [Jacobsen] getting great mile times — just about every distance kid had a personal record and we got different medley and 4x400 relays qualified to really lead the way for a great meet for the team.”

Cooley’s record breaking performance was a 15 second improvement over her personal best, and broke the school record of 12:13.43 previously set by Gretchen Moretti at the 2012 3A West Regional track meet.

In addition to a strong performance on the track, the Panthers won four different field events.

Ine Kolstad earned her first individual qualifying mark in the long jump, winning with a leap of 16 feet, 3/4 inches, to add to her already qualified relay positions; Addy Thorington won the high jump (5-1); Lauryn Bennett won the pole vault (9-0) and Sydney Spomer won the triple jump (32-7).

“Ine had been improving every week and to see another big jump to get her an automatic qualifier was fantastic,” Smith said. “To add that to the 4x100 relay she was part of, beating Worland for the first time all season was great to see.”

The Panthers won all three relays they entered, with the 4x100 team of Averie Warner, Kolstad, Catelynn Floy and Spomer winning in 52.26; the 4x400 team of Audrey Johnson, the Jacobsen sisters and Bartholomew (4:18.81) and the sprint medley team of Kami Jensen, Warner, Johnson and Myah Rakness (4:39.74).

Overall, Powell had 17 top three finishes to run away with the team competition.

SPLIT WEEKEND

This weekend the team is expected to split up, as Smith hopes for a large group of athletes to be invited to the Wyoming Track Classic at Kelly Walsh on Friday.

He said that a majority of the younger athletes will be competing the next day on Saturday in Cowley, heading to the Rocky Mountain Invite.

Smith said this will be the last meet for a lot of kids as they narrow down the team that will be going to regionals in just over two weeks in Worland.
