No days off — that’s a motto the Powell High School cross country team has lived by recently.
The Panthers competed in their third race in seven days with Saturday’s Worland Invite. Nearly every Panther who participated ran a better time than they did at last year’s competition.
“I could not be more proud of how well these kids ran on tired legs,” PHS head coach Ashley Hildebrand said.
Daniel Merritt was once again the Panthers’ top runner on the boys’ side, logging a time of 17:55.80 for an eighth place finish overall. Just behind him, Joey Hernandez finished at 18:11.50 at 11th.
Powell’s third-place finisher for the boys, Riley Schiller, posted a personal-best time of 18:56.60. That was good for 25th overall.
The Panthers finished the event fifth as a team with a score of 102.
“I know that the boys were disappointed with their team finish, but they ran with a lot of heart, and I am excited to see what they can do on fresh legs in the next few weeks,” Hildebrand said.
Only four members of the girls’ team competed, so the team wasn’t eligible for a team score.
Senior Kabrie Cannon was once again the girls’ team’s best finisher, logging a time of 21:24.40 for eighth place. The time was nearly a minute better than a year ago when Cannon competed at the same event.
Gabby Thomas, a sophomore, finished 30th overall for the Panthers’ second-best time of 24:02.60. Right behind her, freshman Meaghan McKeen ran the race in 24:17.30. And Hailee Hyde posted Powell’s fourth-best time at 25:20.40.
The team will compete again on Friday in Cody’s Fox and Hounds Invitational.
