Limited team succeeds at state swimming for Piranhas

Summer swimming reached its conclusion the weekend of July 15-17 when three Piranhas made a big splash at the Wyoming Summer State Championships in Gillette.

Overall, the Piranhas had 14 swimmers who reached qualifying marks for the state meet this summer, but only Kobus Diver, Kaitlin Diver and Aubree Kraft attended the final meet of the season.

Kraft led the way for the Piranhas, placing top six in all of her events at the 10-year-old level.

Kraft placed fourth in the 100 free with a time of 1:32.17, and sixth in both the 50 free and the 200 free earning 41 points for the Piranhas.

“Our three athletes had an awesome meet,” Piranhas Coach Jerry Rodriguez said. “We had a lot of fun and some huge time drops for personal best times.”

Kobus Diver earned the highest placement for Powell in the 17-year-old boys division, earning third place in the 200 breaststroke with a time of 2:59.32.

He also earned a fifth place finish in the 100 breaststroke and the 400 freestyle — earning 75 points for Powell.

Kaitlin Diver made three finals in the 14-year-old girls division, earning an eighth place finish in the 400 free and bringing in 16 points for Powell.

Overall due to the lack of swimmers, the Piranhas were placed into the smallest division as a team for the meet, division III.

Powell placed second in the division, placing behind High Altitude Swim Club from Uinta County.

Rodriguez said the team will continue training into the middle of August, before taking a few weeks off to rest before the winter season.
