Powell High School’s girls tennis team picked up a few wins at the 2019 State Tennis Tournament in Gillette over the weekend, finishing in a tie for 12th place among the 16 schools on hand.

Cheyenne Central took the top spot for the girls with 45 points, winning a tiebreaker over Sheridan. Cody took third with 42 points, despite sweeping all three doubles titles.

The Lady Panthers finished with four points, alongside Rock Springs and Cheyenne South.

It was a rough end to the season for the Lady Panthers, but with just two seniors graduating in Sloane Asay and Hailee Paul, PHS head coach Joe Asay said the girls returning will bring depth and experience to the squad next season.

“We’re excited to have a lot of these girls coming back next season,” coach Asay. “Six of the girls will be back, so that will be a lot of fun. I’m excited for the future of the girls’ program, we have some girls now with state experience, and a good group coming up behind them.”

Sloane Asay finished 0-2 on Thursday at No. 1 singles, ending her tournament, while teammate Ashley Dunkerley finished 1-1 with a win over South’s Jessie Foster (6-0, 6-0) in the consolation bracket. Dunkerley squared off against Cody’s Torrie Schutzman Friday in the consolation quarterfinals, losing in three sets 6-7, 6-4, 6-3.

At No. 1 doubles, Paul and Sophe Morrow fell in the opening round against Cody, but rebounded with a win over Rock Springs (6-4, 6-2). They faced Kelly Walsh in Friday’s consolation quarterfinals, losing 6-3, 6-3.

In No. 2 doubles, Sami Cole and Sydnee Thompson opened with a loss to Cheyenne East, but battled back with a win in the consolation bracket against Cheyenne South (6-0, 6-0). They faced Green River in Friday’s consolation quarterfinals, losing 6-4, 7-6.

At No. 3 doubles, Whitney Hull and Kaili Wiznieswki won their opening-round match against Rock Springs’ Pitt/Cozad in three sets (6-1, 4-6, 6-2). Hull and Wiznieswki lost in the quarterfinals to East, but bounced back in the consolation bracket by beating Natrona County (6-1, 6-1). They then faced a Laramie duo in the consolation quarterfinals, losing 6-2, 6-3.
