Erickson named All-Conference

Another strong season yielded postseason recognition for two members of the Powell High School boys’ basketball team — with Brock Johnson earning his second straight All-State honor and Gunnar Erickson earning 3A West All-Conference honors.

Johnson again finished the year as the Panthers’ leading scorer, increasing his scoring output from 12.9 points per game his sophomore year up to 13.9 in his junior campaign.

His scoring came on 50% shooting from the field while he increased his 3-point shooting from 29% to 32%.

Johnson had three of the Panthers top four scoring performances this season, including a season-high 26 points against Lander in a win-or-go-home game at the 3A West Regional tournament. That win helped the Panthers secure a berth at the state tournament for the second year in a row.

His effort did not go unnoticed on the defensive end of the floor, either. Johnson led the team in steals at 2.6 per contest, including a career-high seven steals against Burlington in January.

Johnson ended the 2022-23 season with 778 points in his prep career and will need another 222 to

surpass 1,000 during his senior season.

Just behind Johnson was Erickson, who finished with an improved scoring output. Erickson jumped from 12.1 points per game in the 2021-22 season to 13.6 during his junior year.

Erickson posted a new career high of 22 points in a game against Worland in January.

He continued to improve his output in nearly every single statistical category, while continuing to be consistent in his shooting percentages in his second year as a starter for the Panthers.

Johnson is the first Panther to earn two straight All-State selections as a Panther since Kalei Smith, who earned three straight selections from 2013-15.

Powell is set to return nearly its entire roster next year, losing only one player — Jace Hyde — to graduation this offseason.
