Johnson breaks 56-year-old Panther record for steals

Shoots past 1,000 point mark Friday

Record-setting defensive and offensive efforts the past few weeks came from senior guard Brock Johnson, who became the all-time steals leader in Powell High School history on Feb. 9 in Worland, while shooting past the 1,000 point mark against Lyman on Friday night.

Defense has been a calling card for Johnson, who has played varsity minutes since his freshman year. He continues to rely on his defensive effort to help shut down the opposition.

In Worland earlier this month he broke a nearly 60-year record that was held by Larry Brown, who finished with 201 steals to end his playing career in 1965-1968.

“I didn’t know (I was close) until we were practicing one day and coach (Waleryan) Wisniewski asked if they had told me about steals and then they told me I was close to the record,” Johnson said.

He shot past the record, recording four steals on the night — he only needed two to break the record — and has pushed the record out further to 218 in contests against Lyman and Mountain View.

“Every day no matter if my offense is working or not, I know my defense will always show up so I always take pride in my defense,” Johnson said. “It’s definitely something to look back on and think that’s pretty special.”

He was honored before the contest against Lyman on Friday by meeting with Brown before the contest in front of the home crowd.

“It was really cool to meet him and kind of see where the record came from,” Johnson said.

In addition to breaking the steals record, Johnson joined the history books at PHS once again by shooting past the 1,000 point mark — the fourth Panther boy to do so in school history.

Johnson had been nearing the mark for several weeks, needing 21 points before the Worland and Buffalo games, but ended up scoring seven in each contest to leave seven more needed heading into this past weekend.

A corner 3-pointer with 5:58 left in the fourth quarter against Lyman in front of the Panther bench shot Johnson over the mark, giving him nine points in the contest and 1,002 for his career.

“The last couple of games we have played people that were face guarding me so it was hard to get those points,” Johnson said. “It was in the back of my mind and now that I’ve passed it it’s more of a relief.”

He is the first Panther to hit the mark since Kalei Smith, who was at PHS from 2011-2015 and is the school record holder for points with 1,534.
