The Powell Panther JV girls’ basketball team continued its strong play at home last weekend, moving to 8-1 on the season after defeating Thermopolis 54-13 on Friday and Worland 46-36 on Saturday.

“We played Thermopolis for the second time in six days and the girls did an excellent job of coming out with a very aggressive mindset and establishing a good early lead,” coach Troy Hildebrand said.

That lead came via a 14-2 first quarter followed by a 19-5 second to establish a dominant 33-7 lead at the break. Another dominant frame came in the third quarter with a 12-0 scoreline, allowing for each player to get in and play significant minutes.

Ivy Agee led the Panthers with 17 points in three quarters.

Kaedenze Carter added 10 points while leading in steals and rebounds.

“It was her best all-around game at the JV level,” Hildebrand said.

Emery Hernandez scored nine points, Hali Hancock six, Melanie Garvia five, Shelby Zickefoose four, Neveah Garcia two and Leah Graham one.

Saturday brought a new challenge for the Panthers, taking on a strong Worland team that tested the hosts.

A high scoring first period had Powell just ahead up 15-12, before Worland rallied in the second to tie the score at 25 heading into halftime.
Worland came out on a 5-0 run to start the third before Carter hit a 3-pointer and sparked a 13-3 run to give Powell a 38-33 lead heading into the fourth.

“We did a much better job on the boards and converting some easy chances on our end to seal the win with an 8-3 fourth quarter,” Hildebrand said. “It was very good for us to have another close game to see some areas that we need to continue improving as we head into the second half of our season.”

Hernandez led with 14, Agee had 11, Graham seven, Zickefoose six, Carter five and Hancock three.

Powell played Cody on the road on Tuesday night and will head to Lovell Thursday (tonight) to take on the Bulldogs at 4 p.m. alongside the JV boys.
