Five Powell Panther boys’ soccer players earned postseason honors, with Holden Cooper, Steven Stambaugh, Jacob Orr and Chance Franks earning All-State honors in addition to Franks earning 3A Underclassman of the Year and Cameron Carpenter earning 3A West All-Conference honors.

UNDERCLASSMAN OF THE YEAR

For the second consecutive year Franks earned All-State honors after missing out his freshman year, but he also earned an additional honor his junior year, being named the 3A Underclassman of the Year.

“It really means a lot to me because I have worked really hard and pushed myself and our team,” Franks said. “I am really honored to receive the 3A Underclassman of the Year award because I put in a lot of extra time this year and it really paid off.”

After a successful 2022 season Franks and the Panthers knew they would have to put in a lot of work in the offseason to improve heading into this season after graduating a large class the year prior.

Franks transitioned to a more attacking position this season, finishing with 20 goals and nine assists for the Panthers.

“We lost a lot of offensive players from the year before, so we decided to make a change to try and put more points on the board,” Franks said.

He scored free kicks consistently for the Panthers, something he said he worked on over the summer after Powell let opportunities slip by in years’ past.

“I spent a lot of time on my free kicks because I knew that we missed a lot of quality opportunities in past years, and I wanted to capitalize on those opportunities,” Franks said.

After being named the Underclassman of the year Franks said that he plans to continue competing throughout the summer at national tournaments in Chicago and Denver, while helping push his teammates in Powell to improve after another strong graduating class left the program.

ALL-STATE AND ALL-CONFERENCE SENIORS

Four additional Panthers earned postseason honors, with seniors Cooper, Stambaugh and Orr earning All-State honors alongside Carpenter earning All-Conference honors.

Carpenter ended up being the second leading scorer for the Panthers with 10 goals on the season in addition to two assists.

Stambaugh and Orr played in more defensive roles, with Stambaugh playing at fullback while Orr was the defensive midfield anchor for Powell.

Despite these roles Stambaugh finished with four goals and Orr earned an assist during the season.

Cooper was the anchor of the team, holding down the net for Powell and finishing with more than 120 saves for Powell, conceding 18 goals while finishing with five shutouts on the season.

This was the first All-State selection for each player alongside Carpenter’s first All-Conference selection.

Powell achieved history this season earning the first conference championship in school history.

“It was amazing to be part of our school history,” Franks said. “We pushed really hard in practices and games to get to that point.”

Franks will be the lone returning selection for the Panthers, and will be one of three Panthers returning who scored a goal this past season as Powell will likely look to rebuild this offseason.
