Despite rain, 30 games played at Legion tournament

“It was a very successful weekend” in Powell for young American Legion Baseball teams from Wyoming and Montana, says Joe Cates, Powell Pioneers program manager.

It was also a lengthy one, as rain interrupted play Saturday and Sunday. However, even with stoppages, all games on the 30-game tournament program were played.

“The rain came in, but we were able to keep the fields in pretty good shape,” Cates said. “We were pushed back about an hour or an hour and a half both Saturday and Sunday nights.”

Sunday’s final game ended at 10:15 p.m. Games observed a two hour and 5 minute time limit, with no innings started after a game was 1 hour and 55 minutes old.

Powell fielded two teams in the tournament, a B team and a C team of players in the 15 and under age bracket.

Powell’s B team entry went 4-1 over the three days while Powell’s C team finished with a three-day record of  2-3.

Powell B upended the Billings 406 Flyers 10-5 Friday with Jacob Gibson the winning pitcher. On Saturday, the B team posted two wins, beating Cody 17-2 and the Magic City Thunder from Billings 3-1. Powell pounded out 13 hits against Cody in support of winning pitcher Dalton Worstell. In a shortened four-inning contest against the Magic City Thunder, Brock Johnson was the winning pitcher.

The Powell B team was no-hit Sunday in a 6-1 loss to the 406 Flyers from Billings. Trey Stenerson took the loss on the mound for Powell. The Powell boys came back in their final game Sunday to defeat the Upper Deck Expos from Billings 8-6. Race Degraffenreid claimed the pitching win, with a save from Kolt Flores.

For the Powell C team, the weekend started with a pair of losses, but the squad evened their record with a pair of wins.

Powell lost to Torrington 8-5 on Friday, with Max Reynolds handling the pitching duties. The C team then fell to Gillette 12-7 Saturday with Hunter Mason on the mound.

The turnaround for the Powell squad started with a 12-5 triumph over Douglas; Alex Jordan was the winning pitcher. The C team broke a 3-3 tie in the bottom of the fifth inning to edge Rock Springs 4-3 in its next outing, with Jordan Loera getting credit for the pitching win.

In their final game on Sunday, the C’s fell to the 406 Flyers from Billings, 17-1. Nathan Feller took the loss for Powell.

Legion teams play six games in two days

Plenty of baseball is on tap for three sets of Powell Pioneer teams in the next two days.

Powell’s Legion B team hosts Cody in a doubleheader today (Tuesday) with games at 5:30 and 7 p.m.
