William M. Jackson, a longtime Powell resident and Heart Mountain homesteader, died on Tuesday, July 22, 2014, at Powell Valley Healthcare. He was 92.

Bill was born on Aug. 31, 1921, to Anna (Jensen) and Oliver Grady Jackson. Following high school, Bill served in the U.S. Army with the 147th Amphibious Combat Engineers during World War II and was on Omaha Beach on D-Day.

He married Alberta B. Engel on Sept. 19, 1943, and the couple celebrated 65 years together before her death in 2008.

Bill and Alberta settled on a homestead farm on Heart Mountain in 1950, where they raised five sons.

Bill was a longtime member of First Baptist Church in Powell, serving as an elder, deacon and greeter in the church. He also served on the Shoshone and Heart Mountain irrigation district boards and was a member of Farm Bureau.

Along with Alberta, he served as a National Weather Service volunteer for over 45 years of weather monitoring in the Heart Mountain area.

Bill enjoyed working with his sons on the farm and building metal sculptures with iron.

He was a loving father, grandfather and great-grandfather and will be missed.

Bill was preceded in death by his parents; wife Alberta; brothers Neil, Bob and Ken; sister Shirley; son Stan; daughter-in-law Kirsten; and grandson Eric.

He is survived by his sons David (Kathi) of Sugarland, Texas, Steve (Linda) of Powell, Dan (Connie) of Harker Heights, Texas, Bill Jr. (Judy) of Clancy, Mont.; daughter-in-law Lynn Jackson of Powell; brothers Wayne (Kathy) Jackson of Dayton, Mont., and Jerald (LaRae) Jackson of Loveland, Colo.; and sister Loraine Lowe of Rifle, Colo. He is also survived by 13 grandchildren and 25 great-grandchildren.

Funeral services will take place at 11 a.m. Monday, July 28, at First Baptist Church, 550 Kattenhorn Drive in Powell. Pastor David Pool will officiate.

Visitation will take place from 6-7:30 p.m. Sunday, July 27, at Thompson Funeral Home in Powell.

Pallbearers are his grandchildren Shawn, Travis, Brian, Todd and Ethan Jackson, and honorary pallbearers are Blake and Jordan Jackson.

Memorial donations in Bill’s name can be made to the County-Wide Chaplaincy, 14000 N.E. 191st Circle, Battle Ground, WA 98604.
