What are we truly about?

I wear several hats: husband, father, pastor, chaplain, football official and I’m sure I can go on and add a few more things, but I won’t. I’m sure you have your own list that you can compose, and we can compare notes. The things I do are fine things, and I would hope that yours are as well, but is that what we’re truly about? We can do good things and help many people but if we are not about the main thing then we are not accomplishing that which is most important when it comes to eternal matters. So, what are we truly about as those who follow Christ? Well, it is simple, we are all about the proclamation of Jesus Christ and his gospel, or at least we should be.

Often, I can say that I get sidetracked from the main thing by various side quests that present themselves and leave off working for the kingdom and begin working for myself. You see it is easy to do good things and not connect them to the gospel and his kingdom, just ask the Pharisees of Jesus’s day. They were always working, always doing, but leaving off from the central issue, the true worship of God. Jesus does not paint a pretty picture of those who follow in their footsteps declaring them whitewashed tombs, pretty on the outside but full of dead men’s bones. So, as one who proclaims the name of Christ, why are you working? Why are you ministering? What is your why? Is it that feeling you get when you do good? Or is it the praise of men? Or could it be, and I hope it is, truly gospel work that you are about. Examine yourself and see if Jesus is what you are truly about. In closing, I think it’s safe to quote Christ concerning the matter as no one said better, “I must be about My Father’s business.”
