Three Westsiders honored for projects on Yellowstone

Winning exhibits displayed at Draper Museum

For about a year, visitors to the Buffalo Bill Center of the West will be able to learn more about various aspects of Yellowstone National Park courtesy of Westside Elementary School fifth graders.

On June 16,  James Heny, Matthew Watson and Dawson Engesser were celebrated for their accomplishments as their projects were delivered to a learning exhibit next to the Draper Museum of Natural History for display.

Fifth grade teacher Lexi Kalberer said that this year the three students were in each of the three fifth grade classrooms.

“These ones are definitely really great shows,” said Alex Martin, who handles classroom learning for the museum.

Each year, fifth graders from Westside Elementary School visit the museum to learn about exhibit design and research methods before taking an annual Yellowstone National Park field trip. At the conclusion of their field trip, the students design and present an exhibit of their choosing about something they saw or experienced in Yellowstone, and winning exhibits are chosen by museum staff.

Geysers were a popular topic this time around, with Watson creating the diorama “How a Geyser Works.” He said he chose the project because upon seeing a geyser  his first thought was, “I wanted to see how it happened.”

Heny produced the diorama “Old Faithful Geyser,” saying he wanted to do his project on “the most famous geyser in the world.”

Engesser went in a new direction with “Fishes in Yellowstone” the first ever slideshow project the museum has displayed as part of the program.

“My dad taught me how to fish and I love fishing,” he said by way of explanation.
