Summer sports heating up

Summer activities continue to chug along in Powell and across the nation as the hockey season capped off with its champions being crowned Sunday night.

The Colorado Avalanche put an end to the Tampa Bay Lightning’s dynasty, stopping a three-peat dead in its tracks and winning a title for the first time in two decades.

Golden State renewed its championship aspirations after winning its fourth title in eight years, continuing one of the most dominant runs in NBA history after a short hiatus following persistent injuries.

The NBA also recently held its draft, bringing in — hopefully — another generation with stars who can make an impact on the league in years to come.

Excitement will pick up around the league this upcoming week, with free agency kicking off Thursday at 4 p.m.

The nation recently celebrated the 50th anniversary of the Title IX Act being passed, helping remember female athletes who have made an impact since its enactment and are continuing to grow sports today for all.

A difficult season had the Pioneers riding the highs and lows, and they are currently riding on a high heading into a grueling stretch of the season filled with conference games and one final tournament before the district tournament in just over three weeks’ time.

Professional baseball continues to move along in its grueling 162 game season, and professional football is hosting players in the offseason with preseason camps beginning next month.

Local athletes continue to push along, attending camps, earning recognitions and making an impression around the region.

Hot weather has not slowed down activities, as people continue to get out and get involved.

The fall sports scene is rapidly approaching.

College sports are set to kick off at the beginning of August, bringing in new athletes from around the country and world to Powell to be part of Trapper athletics.

Volleyball and both soccer teams kick off the long nine-month run of constant activities, followed a week later by high school golf and tennis.

Football, volleyball, cross country and girls’ swimming will kick off a week later as those sports seasons run longer than tennis and golf.

Young athletes are hoping to make an impact in each sport, continuing to grow strong classes of Panther athletics working through the high school ranks.

Sports in Powell recently earned a victory, as new sporting opportunities were offered to athletes from sixth grade all the way through high school in an effort to keep kids involved especially during the winter months.

While athletes continue to compete in a number of summer sports, the fall season will be here before we know it, causing a lot of chaos around the area and kicking off another year of growth and personal bests.

Over the next month, baseball will continue to be the focus, but we will be taking a look at recruiting classes for Trapper athletics and start previewing fall sports that are expected to be in full swing soon.
