A Sheridan attorney and prosecutor has been named as a circuit court judge for the Fourth Judicial District. Sheryl Smith Bunting will serve Sheridan and Johnson counties and replace retiring Circuit Court Judge Shelley A. Cundiff.

Bunting grew up in Buffalo and earned her bachelor’s and juris doctorate degrees from the University of Wyoming.

“Sheryl [Bunting] has demonstrated a thoughtful approach to the law that, along with her years of experience in the Fourth Judicial District, will serve her well as a Circuit Court judge, ” Gov. Mark Gordon said in announcing her appointment on Friday.

Bunting is currently in private practice with Tarver, Kerns & Bunting. She served as a deputy Sheridan County attorney from 2008 until 2018 and has served as City of Sheridan’s Municipal Court judge since 2018.

In a statement, Bunting said she was honored at the appointment and looking forward to serving the people of Sheridan and Johnson counties.

Gordon picked Bunting among three nominees. The others were Fremont County Attorney Patrick LeBrun and Jalie Meinecke of Meinecke & Sitz, who practices law in Cody and Sheridan.

Bunting will take the bench Jan. 2.
