Sen. Lummis was wrong to support same-sex marriage

Posted

Dear editor:

In the Dec. 1 story “Sen. Lummis Votes to Protect Same-Sex Marriage,” by Jasmine Hall of the Wyoming Tribune Eagle, Sen. Cynthia Lummis tried to explain why she voted for the misnamed “Respect for Marriage Act.”  It seems that it all boiled down to her being dismayed at being “vilified and despised” by those who disagree with her moral beliefs, and that they “use their own hateful speech” to make sure that she knows that she is hated. I’m sure no one would enjoy that kind of treatment, but she was not elected by the people of Wyoming to be swayed by such as that. She was elected to stand up for what is right.

Our nation is in a downward spiral because we have lost our spiritual moorings. We used to have a belief in God and his word and taught our children the same and expected moral behavior in others. Not anymore. It seems the world has been turned upside down. What is good has become bad, and what is bad has become good. God foretold of such in his word, “Woe to those who call evil good, and good evil; Who substitute darkness for light and light for darkness; Who substitute bitter for sweet and sweet for bitter!” (Isaiah 5:20) It applied back then and it applies today.

God says, “He who justifies the wicked and he who condemns the righteous, both of them alike are an abomination to the LORD.” (Proverbs 17:15) Sen. Lummis’ vote in favor of the misnamed “Respect for Marriage Act” certainly falls under that scripture. God created marriage between one man and one woman. That is what marriage is and has always been. The Congress has no authority to change that definition. It breaks God’s law and also the U. S. Constitution. Nothing in the Constitution gives the federal government the authority over marriage.

Sen. Lummis tries to justify her vote by saying, “The Bible teaches that marriage is between one man and one woman. I accept God’s word, including God’s word as to the definition of marriage. I support my church’s adherence to that biblical pronouncement. I support Wyoming statute, which codifies that definition. I find solace in people and organizations that share my beliefs.” However, according to her vote, it is reasonable to conclude that her belief is her preference, but it is not her conviction. Her vote is not in agreement with God’s word. Also, Wyoming statute, which codifies that definition, will be in danger of being changed in favor of the homosexual agenda. Her church, as well as others, and the people and organizations that she finds “solace” in will eventually come under attack.

She is also quoted as saying, “We do well by taking this step, not embracing or validating each other’s devoutly held views, but by the simple act of tolerating them.” God does not tolerate sin. Jesus said, “He who is not with Me is against Me, and he who does not gather with Me scatters abroad.” (Matthew 12:30, NKJV)  Not only that, but sin is never satisfied, it always wants more.  This affirming of the homosexual agenda will lead to the loss of freedoms for those who disagree with homosexual “marriage” and agenda. We have seen Christian business people who have been sued by homosexuals for not serving them. Their lives have been damaged by what should have been their right to follow their own religious beliefs. Thanks to her and the others who voted for this monstrous bill, we are all open to being persecuted by the government because of our beliefs. Freedom of speech and other liberties will be threatened as its evil tentacles push into the lives of all Americans. Many of us are sorely disappointed that Sen. Lummis joined the liberals to affirm this evil.
