Robotics team should be better supported, as sports are, by school district

Dear editor:

I was so delighted when I read in the Powell Tribune and saw that once again children were featured excelling in education. The article was titled “Powell Middle school robotics head to California.” We all love our football and basketball. With three children I have indeed spent my time on the bleachers. It was refreshing to see other areas within the school system being recognized.

I will let you know here that I have a little bias because one of the children is my grandchild. I read the article and was so happy for these young people. Then as I continued to read I became very dismayed, downright disgusted. Powell school has no funding to help these children to go to California. Don’t get me wrong, I do feel family can help and the children themselves can do fundraisers, which they are. Still, if this was a football or basketball accomplishment not an academic accomplishment, would the school be willing to support this?

The final straw for me was when I read that one of these young men was selling his private coin collection to help fund this school activity.

To be fair I have a call into Mr. Jay Curtis which he has not returned. Let’s hope I will learn that I am mistaken.
