Property tax increases should be 1% per year or less

Dear editor:

Following is an open letter to legislators and commissioners:

I am writing you on the importance of property tax increases, as per the county assessor’s valuation. I along with several others hope that property tax is not increased more than 1% per year; anything higher means that most senior citizens must think about selling their homes and perhaps moving in with a relative. I have many friends who are worried and this is why I am writing.

Even if fair market value increases much more than 1%, citizens cannot afford more than a 2% increase; indeed it is already difficult for many to pay property taxes as it is.

We are requesting details of current proposed legislation for the Wyoming Constitution pertaining to tax increases. Regarding this upcoming legislation, please be sure to pinpoint only this issue, and not include several riders and special interest requests onto the bill — it likely will not pass unless the bill is exclusively on the subject of property taxes.

Thank you for your response and work on this issue.
