Open letter to Wyoming legislators and county commissioners: Recently blessed with the latest property tax bill. A “minor” increase in just over 25%. Real estate taxes are, truly, a tax on wealth. Most people have “wealth” tied up in their property for which they have worked for all their lives. This “wealth” is only wealth until it is sold. This year we are witnessing a 25% increase in “wealth” with no corresponding increase in earnings or commodity pricing. This has resulted in a windfall for government, who will now figure out how to squander this newfound cash infusion.
Our legislators/commissioners need to come to grips with this. This is how tax revolts begin and tax limitation ballot initiatives are proposed. Wyoming Constitution mandates that property be assessed at market value, then reduced by some percentage for taxable value, and mill levied applied. Consider changing the percentage adjustment and/or adjusting mill levies to meet a realistic estimate of annual operating cost and budget. Something needs to change, and soon.
