Powell shooters earn state titles

Posted

Powell’s Beth Brazelton has added two individual state trophies to her collection of “six or seven,” she said after winning the .22 and muzzleloader rifle titles in Douglas two weekends ago during the 4-H state shooting competition.

The modest former Powell High School student was participating in her final competition while also attending college. She broke the state record for points with her .22 rifle with open sights, scoring 338 out of 400, as well as scoring her second state title in the muzzleloading class; also winning the top trophy in 2019. The secret of her success? Staying cool.

“I was definitely a lot more relaxed than I have been in the last couple of years. I think that helped a lot,” she said during a recent interview.

She loves using muzzleloaders and recorded the top score of 237 out of 260 in the class. She credits her father, David Brazelton, for her love for muzzleloading and shooting sports.

Studying veterinarian technology and animal sciences, the Eastern Wyoming College freshman won four individual competitions in early June at the county shoot, earning blue ribbons in the senior .22 rifle, .22 pistol, Blue Face target archery and 3-D archery competitions. Participants who are still 18 as of Jan. 1 can continue to compete in 4-H events.

The Park County shooters performed well at the state shoot, said 4-H leader Starla Craig. The team brought home 24 individual trophies, seven first place team plaques and medals, nine second place team titles and two third place teams.

“The many volunteers should be commended for all that they do for the youth in shooting sports and the 4-H program. Lifetime skills are being fostered in kids that they will have for a lifetime,” Craig said. “I have been a 4-H leader in Park County for 40 years and I have enjoyed every minute of it. The kids are the best part!”
