Operating room remodel big capital item in next hospital budget

A remodel of Powell Valley Healthcare’s operating room is expected to account for much of the total capital expenditure out of the Powell Valley Hospital District’s FY2024 capital budget.

Board members approved the budget at the June 26 board meeting. The hospital district board handles big capital projects, while the Powell Valley Healthcare Board of Directors handles the larger operating costs, salaries, etc.

“It’s pretty basic, a million dollars worth of capital slated for the next fiscal year,” CFO Joy Coulston said.

She said they will push to get the remodel done in FY24, which started July 1, but they have until FY26 to finish it and still be able to use the federal funds that help pay for it. The funding comes from a $630,294 grant with a 50% match required.

And even if they are able to do all of the OR work in the next fiscal year, and thus expend all of the necessary funds, Coulston said the hospital would still end FY24 with $1.4 million in funds.

The numbers aren’t final, however, as Coulston said she has yet to receive the final word on their exact mill levy amount for this year.

Coulston said at a prior meeting that a previous large capital project, a new ambulance bay, was progressing toward completion on schedule.
