Number your days

So, you’re hanging out Saturday night and then you remember that you need to get to bed because the government in all their wisdom was stealing an hour of your life. You wake up the next day wondering what time it is; why are you up so early, and where did that time go? That’s life in general, isn’t it? You wake up one morning and your little ones are now big ones and life has kept moving forward and usually quicker than you expected. On top of that the new year’s resolution you set for yourself to read the Bible in a year was never accomplished, and that was in 2007. Time keeps its steady march and we lose track of it, and we lose track of the tasks at hand. This is why Moses in Psalm 90:12 declares, “So teach us to number our days that we may get a heart of wisdom.”

We as people are readily sidetracked. Ask my wife: I’m the king of getting distracted, but that takes us away from the important work of the kingdom. When we fail to number our days, we always think we have another day; we don’t. Moses here tells us to number our days for a purpose, that we may get a heart of wisdom. Proverbs tell us that wisdom is the principal thing, and that we should seek it.

Now why is so much attention paid to wisdom? Because it is the right application of knowledge. I may know facts, but if I can’t apply them I’m a knowledgeable soup sandwich. We need the Lord to teach us to number our days so the things we learn can be applied correctly in the work of his kingdom, that he may be glorified and that souls will be saved. Our days are to be numbered so we use them wisely in meaningful work and service towards our fellowman and the king of kings.
