New coordinator takes over search and rescue operations

William “Bill” Brown took over as Park County’s new search and rescue coordinator on Monday.

“I’ll do my best for the citizens and visitors to our little slice of heaven we call Cody,” Brown said in a comment on the Park County Sheriff’s Office’s Facebook page.

Appointed by Sheriff Scott Steward, the coordinator is responsible for overseeing the planning, training, deployment and everyday operations of the Park County Search and Rescue team, which encompasses anywhere from 25 to 30 volunteers.

The team is tasked with organizing, planning, training, maintaining equipment, and responding to incidents requiring search and rescue assistance; those calls can range from assisting hikers who are injured in the backcountry to recovering bodies from difficult-to-reach places.

Brown has been “an active and dedicated member” of Park County Search and Rescue for 10 years, the sheriff’s office said in a news release. Brown comes from a management background and has a skill set that includes personnel management, organization, and business operations, along with equipment and mission experience. Brown’s training and experience will be invaluable in the position, Steward said. The sheriff told county commissioners on Tuesday that Brown’s familiarity with machines and ability to remove and install parts from vehicles will also be an asset.

“We’ll be able to save a lot of money,” Steward said.

As part of his duties, Brown will act as the primary liaison between search and rescue and the sheriff’s office. He replaces C. Lance Mathess, who has retired from the sheriff’s office after serving as its public affairs officer and search and rescue coordinator.

Brown grew up in Cody with his father, the late Bob Brown — who served as a sergeant with the sheriff’s office and volunteered for more than a decade with search and rescue — mother Nancy Brown and his sister.

“Having had the privilege of being born and raised in Cody, Wyoming, Bill Brown cares deeply for this community and its people,” the news release said.

Brown currently lives in Cody with his wife and daughter.
