Dear editor,
I am amazed and saddened that our schools in Park and Big Horn counties do not recognize Martin Luther King Day. I have taught in four states and Wyoming is the only state where schools do not have school wide activities or a day off in honor of the work Martin Luther King Jr. did for the civil rights movement in the 60s. I am sure there are plenty of teachers who did talk about his civil rights movement and the injustice being shown to people of color. Also, about how Martin Luther King Jr. advocated for justice for ALL people. Two of his many quotes, “Our lives begin to end the day we become silent about the things that matter” and “I have decided to stick with love. Hate is too great a burden to bear” are my personal favorites.
Plus, did you know that Wyoming doesn’t even give MLK the holiday to himself? The state holiday is called MLKday/Wyoming Equality Day, and sometimes only Wyoming Equality Day!
Back on Aug. 28, 1963, my dad and I, along with hundreds of other people were at the Lincoln Memorial in Washington, D.C., listening to Martin Luther King Jr. give his “I Have a Dream..” speech. What a visionary, and God-fearing man Martin Luther King Jr was!
