Cody resident Steven Novakovich pleaded not guilty Wednesday to felony charges of aggravated homicide by vehicle, which resulted in the death of a Powell man, and driving while under the influence.
He also faces one misdemeanor charge of failing to conduct a turn.
Novakovich’s alleged offenses date back to an Aug. 26 collision on U.S. Highway 14A which resulted in the death of Charles Wentz, of Powell, and the hospitalization of Wentz’s wife Diana. According to the affidavit by Wyoming Highway Patrol trooper Brett Tillery, Novakovich was following his girlfriend when he attempted a left turn and collided with Wentz’s vehicle. At the time of testing, Novakovich’s BAC was recorded at 0.121% with a breathalyzer.
Novakovich is free on a $50,000 cash or surety bond, and no pretrial date is scheduled at this time. If convicted of aggravated homicide by vehicle Novakovich faces not more than 20 years in prison or a $10,000 fine. A felony conviction of driving under the influence carries not more than 10 years in prison or a fine of between $2,000 and $5,000, failing to conduct a turn carries a fine of not more than $200.
Novakovich was represented in district court by attorney Sarah Miles. He was previously represented by Buffalo attorney Nick Beduhn. Deputy county attorney Jack Hatfield represented the state.
