Kost says Amendment B a review of retirement age

State Sen. R.J. Kost of Powell says there is not a right way or wrong way to answer the proposed constitutional Amendment B that would increase the retirement age for District Court and Supreme Court judges from 70 to 75.

Wyoming voters will consider in the Nov. 8 general election the proposed amendment that would raise the compulsory age for judicial retirement to age 75.

Kost looks on it as a review of how people in the 70-75 age group function in today’s society.

“If you look back 40 to 50 years ago, 70 was considered old,” he observed. “Now it is not considered old, and look at how many are doing active things at this age.”

Kost also said raising the judicial retirement age would have a budgetary impact.

“The extra five years (of judicial service) would be five years that the state would not have to cover the cost of a retired person as well as the wage for the newly appointed judge,” he said.
