Jay Cox recently represented the Powell area at Wyoming Boys’ State.

Held annually in June at the state fairgrounds in Douglas, the event offers high school juniors from across the state a chance to participate in a week’s worth of activities while learning about their state and its government.

Cox and other delegates got a first-hand look at how government works, experiencing what it takes to create and enact laws.

Speakers included Gov. Mark Gordon, U.S. Sens. Mike Enzi and John Barrasso and U.S. Rep. Liz Cheney.

The week emphasizes leadership, civic engagement and patriotism, and organizers say delegates form life-long friendships.

The week culminated with a visit to the State Capitol in Cheyenne, where delegates occupy the House and Senate chambers, as well as the various offices and agencies of Wyoming’s government. Delegates got the opportunity to meet Gov. Gordon and many of his staff members.
