Former resident recalls life in the Powell Valley

Posted

Carole Dickerson and her late husband, Dr. Bob Dickerson, were longtime residents of Powell until 2017, when they moved to Kansas to be closer to family. In Kansas, Carole took a writing class.

She submitted this piece that speaks to her memories of living where Heart Mountain is always a reminder of the beautiful Powell Valley:

Have you ever been awakened by the chirping of birds and the whinny sound from horses in the pasture? These sounds were the alarm that signaled it was 5 a.m. You smiled to  yourself as you recognized the sounds and turned over for a couple more hours of sleep.  We were both retired in the early 2000s, and it was no longer necessary to jump out of bed, shower and prepare ourselves for the day.  After a couple more hours of sleep, our body told us it was time to get out of bed.  Carole would go into the kitchen to make coffee, and Bob walked down the long driveway to the mailbox where he retrieved the Billings Gazette, our daily newspaper for national news. Our local newspaper, the Powell Tribune, was delivered on Tuesday and Thursday.

As we looked out our front door, we were always amazed at the sunny big blue sky above us. I have been known to say “a sunny Wyoming sky can always put a hop and skip into your day.” Through our open front door you could also view Heart Mountain in the distance. It is snow-capped in the winter and indeed a painting waiting to be painted.

We often heard from friends preparing and packing suitcases for a vacation trip. For Bob and I, living in Wyoming was our vacation.

Carole Dickerson titled her short essay “Remembering.”
