Forest officials make changes to post and pole permits

Posted

Bighorn National Forest officials have made recent changes to post and pole harvesting.

Post and pole (live, dead, and tepee) cutting is now open forest-wide unless otherwise designated. No cutting areas include Cloud Peak Wilderness, active timber sales, research natural areas and administrative sites — including recreation residences, campgrounds, picnic areas, recreation sites, resort areas, or any area closed to cutting forest products.

Harvesting posts and poles still requires a permit. The permits will be available after July 1. They allow permit holders to cut material 7 inches or less in diameter, measured at 12 inches from the ground. There is no maximum length per piece.  Permits are sold for $9 each with a minimum purchase of three, for a total of $27. Each permit is good for 20 posts or poles.

A permit is required for cutting a set of tepee poles for family ceremonial use.  One permit will be issued per family upon request at no charge. Maps and information will be provided with the permit.

For more details, contact Pam Cooper with the forest’s timber program at 307-674-2649.
