Firefighters had to put out a small wildfire in Shell Canyon in the Bighorn National Forest on Sunday, after someone abandoned a campfire, forest officials.
The Wyoming Hotshots put out the fire after it burned roughly a tenth of an acre near the Post Creek picnic area.
Bighorn forest officials are asking anyone with information about incident to call the Forest Service at 307-674-2600.
“Over 50% of wildfires on the Bighorn National Forest are human caused,” said Sara Evans Kirol, a public affairs officer for the forest. “Abandoned campfires are a major factor in determining if fire restrictions are needed to prevent wildfires. Please remember to put your campfire completely out.”
To extinguish a fire, add water and/or dirt and stir until it’s cool enough to touch before leaving. Visit smokeybear.com/en/prevention-how-tos/campfire-safety for more fire prevention tips.
