Annie Oakley’s sharp-shooting story will be coming to Powell High School Friday, May 5 and Saturday, May 6 when the Powell High School Drama Club performs “Annie Get Your Gun” by Dorothy and Herbert Fields with music and lyrics by Irving Berlin. The musical which first hit Broadway in 1946 is a fictionalized account of Oakley’s rise to stardom after she joins Buffalo Bill’s Wild West Show and finds romance with fellow marksman Frank Butler.
“She falls head over heels for Frank, but soon eclipses him as the main attraction in the show. Her success with a gun makes trouble for Annie’s chance at romance,” the synopsis reads. “‘Annie Get Your Gun’ follows the journey of Annie and Frank, revealing their competitive natures as they vie for best shot — and each other’s hearts.”
